Day 9 – Cappadocia to Izmir (Nov 19)
Today was a travel day. After seeing a great display of the ballooning over Cappadocia we departed to the Kayseri Airport to go to Izmir on the west coast.
We saw and photoed the large mountain that is near Kayseri but the haze makes it hard to get a good pic. We dropped the car off uneventfully and checked in with an hour to spare. We had a bite at the airport café, cheese tost and tea and then waited to board. It was 1h25m trip and we landed at the Izmir airport.
What a large place!!! We fetched the car from Enterprise and headed across to the carpark to fetch the car. Seems all the rental cars are white!! Got a Ford Focus manual diesel and then headed out.
Driving through Izmir is something out of the movies!!! I began to wonder about declining the CDW on the rental agreement. Thom did well navigating and reacting to the crazy Turk drivers. It was nice to get out of the city and onward toward Foca. A nice, probably overrun place in the summer, seaport town.
Our Hotel Karacam is perfect. Small renovated and we got the room with the balcony overlooking the waterfront. Perfect.
We did a walkabout to see the boats and start to hone in on the daily proverbial question – where to eat dinner?
There’s a Greek meze/fish place that is tempting but has no yelp reviews. Not many do here…..
Tomorrow is a long driving day – first to visit Pergamma (ancient) and then onto Selcuk where we will stay 3 nights and see the ancient sites in the area – planning to go to Ephesus on Monday.
