We spent 4 days biking in the area around Eureka before going north and into the hills, once again!, to visit cousin Conor and his wife Rachel. Other members of the family included several elderly beasts, Murray the cat, and Sheba the dog. The comfortable house is an extended cabin type building in the redwood forest. Hummingbirds visit frequently! The yard is filled with rhododendrons and azaleas of many colors. Stunning to see them mostly in bloom.

We enjoyed sitting in the woods on our first day. With great guidance we borrowed a car and drove north a short ways to visit Dry Lagoon State Park and Big Lagoon County Park. The beaches are stunning! We wandered at Big Lagoon in search of terrific little rocks and agates. We lucked out and found a small orange agate.

We then worked our way south to Trinidad. A small town up on a cliff above the ocean and Trinidad Head is a mini mountain with a lighthouse on the far side. We hiked up and around but never found the lighthouse. Turns out it’s only open to the public on the first Saturday of each month. We saw the gated road to it, but it was not visible. I found a photo online to get an idea of what it looks like. It’s reported that during a big storm, a 90’+ wave broke over the top of the lighthouse. Hard to imagine.

We stopped for lunch at the Trinidad Eatery, famous for their clam chowder. We shared a cup and it was rich and thick. I had a terrific salad with crab ontop and Thom had a delicious sandwich— can’t remember what it was, though.

We continued on a narrow, rural road to Moonstone Beach. This is a wide, vast, sandy beach which at low tide had the water’s edge hundreds of feet from the parking area. We saw someone kite surfing there as well which seems rare as generally there is too much surf. Here it was a normal beach!

Thank you cousins!

We left to make the journey to Yosemite – stopping twice along the way to break up the journey. Hoping for good conditions there.
